Quick Capture on iOS

On iOS 26, Quick Capture lets you instantly create notes from the Lock Screen, Control Center, Home Screen widgets, or Shortcuts without waiting for your vault to load.

• Customize Locations to capture to a new note, today’s daily note, a bookmarked note, or any note you choose, with optional templates.

Improvements

• Text and interface elements now scale with your system’s preferred text size, including larger accessibility sizes.
• Right-to-left (RTL) languages: Swipe gestures and page animations are now flipped.
• Settings now open in a sheet over the app. Swipe anywhere to dismiss.
• iOS: Added support for the new extra large widgets in iOS 27 for View Note and Quick Capture.
• iOS: Share Sheet now uses the vault accent color.
• Android: The Open Note widget now displays the name of the note.
• Android: The “Insert attachment” mobile toolbar button now allows taking a photo directly.

Bases

This update introduces support for opening individual Markdown files, a kanban view for Bases, and highlight colors.

Important: opening Markdown files requires the latest installer. Download Obsidian from our website and reinstall the app.

Open individual Markdown files

You can now open individual Markdown files from outside your vault in Obsidian, and preview them on macOS using Quick Look. Files open in your current window.

• Added the “Open file from outside the vault…” command. Pick a Markdown file on your computer and view it in the app.
• Obsidian now appears in your operating system’s Open with menu, and you can set it as the default app for Markdown files.
• On macOS you can use Quick Look previews for Markdown files even when Obsidian is closed.
• Added document icons on macOS and Windows for .md, .base and .canvas.
• Image embeds and links to other local files resolve relative to the Markdown file’s folder.
• Use Outline to navigate headings and Outgoing links to browse linked files.

Kanban view and group options for Bases …

Improvements

• Bases: Added “Hide column” to the right-click menu of a kanban column.
• Bases: A base made with “Create new base” now names its first view “View” instead of “Table”.
• Search in the File Explorer, Bookmarks, Outline, and Sync views now matches the full path of each item. Excluding a term (e.g. -Archive) now hides a matching folder and everything inside it.
• The Outline and Outgoing links views now work for files opened from outside the vault.

No longer broken

• Bases: Fixed “Copy path” showing up below “Delete” when you right-click a file in a table, cards, or kanban view.
• Bases: Fixed a base failing to load when a view’s groupOrder is not a list.
• Bases: Fixed “Add group” in the Group menu not adding a group when selecting a link suggestion.
• Fixed property suggestions sometimes showing results for an earlier query, which made Enter pick an old link instead of what you typed.
• Fixed a memory leak in the metadata cache after opening and editing external files.

• iOS: Added template support to Quick Capture when its behavior is set to daily note or a selected note.

• iOS: Fixed a crash when launching the app on iOS 17 and earlier.
• iOS: Fixed Quick Capture saving new notes in the same folder as the current file when the vault root is selected.
• iOS: Fixed the Quick Capture location sheet not matching the active color scheme.
• iOS: Fixed syllables sometimes disappearing while typing in Korean.
• Fixed “Setup Obsidian Sync” on the vault chooser screen loading forever after your login expired.

• Bases: Added a Group menu to the toolbar for choosing the property to group by. Use it to reorder, hide, and add groups by hand in any view type.
• Redesigned empty state and added “New base” and “New canvas” when their plugins are enabled.

• Added “Increase font size” and “Decrease font size” commands.
• Added an update notice in Settings → General when a newer installer is available.
• Bases: Improved how dates and times are rendered in group headers and in readonly layouts (e.g. Cards, Kanban).
• Bases: Embedded kanban boards no longer have a fixed height.
• Improved fuzzy search in the Quick switcher and suggestions: matches where your letters start words now rank higher, and searching is faster in large vaults.
• When opening an untrusted vault, themes and snippets will be temporarily disabled while the “Do you trust the author of this vault” dialog is on screen.
• Improved search in the Bookmarks, Outline, Tags, and Sync views. Everything inside a matching item now stays visible. Groups with nothing to show are hidden.
• In Source mode, pressing ArrowUp on the first line of a note now moves the cursor to the inline title, like in Live Preview.

You can now open files from outside your vault in Obsidian. The file opens in your current window (Desktop only).

Improvements

• All in-app links now take you to the localized version of the Obsidian website.
• Base font size is no longer saved to appearance.json. It is now stored in the device’s local storage, so it no longer syncs with Obsidian Sync.
• Improved drag and drop in the kanban layout and File Explorer. The view now smoothly scrolls when dragging near the edge.
• The editor link suggestions (e.g. [[) and the quick switcher no longer switch to a simplified algorithm in vaults with more than 10,000 files. Fuzzy matching is now always used.
• Format converter: Removed old formats from the converter plugin.

Bases

• Kanban: Cards can now be moved between folder columns when grouped by file.folder.
• Kanban: Creating a note in a column now places it in the corresponding folder when grouped by file.folder.
• Kanban: Added error feedback when moving a card fails, such as when the note has invalid properties or the target folder is missing.

• iOS 26: Added a configurable Quick Capture Home Screen widget. Add shortcuts to capture directly to different Locations.

• Use --font-preferred-size for text that should respect the system’s preferred text size. On mobile, it combines --font-text-size with the --preferred-text-scale multiplier.

iOS

• Native Quick Capture on iOS 26. Capture notes from the Lock Screen, Control Center, or Shortcuts without waiting for your vault to load. While editing, your capture also remains accessible through a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.
• Quick Capture: Create Locations to capture to a new note, today’s daily note, a bookmarked note, or any note you choose.
• Quick Capture: Templates support variables such as {{latitude}} and {{longitude}} for your current position.
• Share Sheet now uses the vault accent color.

• The Configure toolbar button now takes you directly to the mobile toolbar settings page (previously it took you to “Interface”).
• Fixed Hotkeys settings overflowing and causing the page to scroll horizontally.
• Fixed missing close animation when tapping the “x” button in the command palette.

Right-to-left lanaguages (RTL)

• Settings: The swipe-back gesture is now flipped.
• Page animations are now flipped.

New

Editor

• Added color highlights. Add a color emoji (🔴, 🟠, 🟡, 🟢, 🔵, 🟣) to the start of a highlight to change its color, or pick a color from the new formatting submenu.
• Typing == in the editor now suggests highlight colors.
• Live Preview: When the cursor overlaps a highlight, an inline swatch now appears. Click it to quickly change the highlight color.

Bases

• Added a new kanban layout to display files in ordered columns. Use Group by to define the columns, then drag and drop to reorder them.
• Groups are now collapsible in the table, cards, and list layouts.

Improvements

• The entire workspace, including the sidebars, now flips when Obsidian is set to a right-to-left (RTL) language. Commands stay the same, so “Toggle left sidebar” now refers to the visual left sidebar, even when the interface is flipped.

• Closing popout windows (such as Settings) is now much faster.

• Editor: Pasting a list item onto a line that already contains a list marker (e.g. - [ ] ) no longer duplicates the marker.

• Editor: Improved the inline formatting commands. For example, “Toggle bold” on this line:

No longer broken

• Fixed “Open local graph” and similar commands opening tabs in a new tab group on phones, where tab groups are not supported.
• iOS: Fixed editor sometimes selecting entire paragraph after double-tapping on text or dragging cursor.

Improvements

• The app now waits for configuration files to finish saving when quitting to avoid the file getting corrupted.
• Improved “Undo close tab” behavior. Tabs now reopen in the correct tab group, and if the currently active tab is the “New tab” page, it will no longer be reused.
• Removed dialog to approve URI actions because it was creating even more confusion for non-technical users. 1.13 already introduced some new guardrails like Mermaid diagrams being off by default.

Settings

• The settings window now closes when pressing Escape.
• Tab and Shift-Tab now move focus to the next focusable element instead of staying locked to the current row, making it easier to navigate to links.
• When Obsidian is fullscreen, the settings window now opens on top of the app window instead of creating an additional fullscreen window.
• The settings window titlebar now scales with the current zoom level.
• Sliders in settings now use the accent color.
• The startup stats window now shows more granular information about startup speed.
• Fixed font selection page crashing on Linux (requires latest installer).

No longer broken

• Fixed a few issues with link suggestions in the property editor. For example, typing # in a link would cause the link to get overridden.
• Fixed the window not getting focused when using a URI to open a specific vault.
