Apple tries to steal our thunder with their iOS 13 release, but we stay calm, as we’re sure: AdGuard 3.1 for iOS is big news! There are many noteworthy improvements to filtering process, design and licensing system. Let’s tackle the new version one change at a time.

[Added] New content blocker — Security #1103

In v3.0 we “split up” AdGuard for iOS into five content blockers to circumvent the Safari limitation on 50k rules per ad blocker (which is a ridiculously small number). Each of the content blockers was assigned a specific role, for example, “Privacy” or “Annoyances”. But then we thought: the more content blockers, the more rules you can use at the same time, right? So why not add another one? And we didn’t have to go out of our way for that, as “Security” is a category that organically complements the rest. Previously, filters from that category were included into “Other” group.

Note that you need to enable this new content blocker in Safari settings for it to work!

Two months of development are rarely enough to come up with an update that big. Despite that, AdGuard 3.2 for Android is packed with major new features, not mentioning the long list of minor changes that goes on and on.

There’s something for both experienced users (userscripts support, DNS user filter) and for absolute beginners (feature discovery) to help them make their first steps. And everyone will equally appreciate the improved stability and speed that come with CoreLibs filtering engine update.

This update will not blow you away, unless you are really, really into bugfixes and under the hood improvements. But those we have aplenty, especially when it comes to CoreLibs filtering engine. As a result, the new Mac version works faster and blocks ads better than its predecessor, but lacks bit in the wow-factor: the only new feature is, admittedly, rather tame.

[Added] Automatic filter subscriptions detection #279

Most filters have “subscribe” buttons on their homepages or in other places. From now on, AdGuard will be able to intercept click on such links and offer you to add these filters to the app. It’s not much perhaps, but it’s a nice thing to have and it certainly won’t hurt anyone 🙂

This update fixes a lot of small-ish bugs, this is a hotfix of sorts if you will. We started addressing iOS 13-related issues, as its gaining more and more popularity among users despite still being in beta.

[Added] Two-Factor Authentication (if enabled in Account) #985

In v3.0 we added an option to log into your adguard.com personal Account via the app to activate Premium features of AdGuard for iOS. We completely forgot to take into account that some users have had two-factor authentication configured. Now we fix this unfortunate mistake, from now on you’ll be prompted to confirm your identity with an authenticator app in such case.

Your average grocery list is probably longer than this update’s changelog, but don’t let it fool you. We introduce two powerful new tools that are going to serve well to filtering rules creators and will noticeably improve the ad blocking quality.

[Added] Scriptlets support #1366

Scriptlets is a powerful ad blocking instrument. You can say that scriptlet is an internal script (a mini-program) that we install in the extension, and then execute that script with the help of filtering rules. Putting it simply, scriptlets allow us to modify how the code of the web page behaves. As for the practical use, this helps to block anti-ad blockers, for example.

[Added] $redirect and $rewrite modifiers support #1367

They are practically the same modifiers, and they allow to substitute resources. If you are not a custom filtering rules aficionado, don't bother with it. Just know that it is yet another instrument in the hands of filter developers that helps efficiently block ads.

We should mention that both $redirect and $rewrite modifiers are still kind of working in test mode, but they are fully operational and you should feel free to use them.

This is huge! AdGuard 3.0 for iOS has lots of new things that should get you excited! DNS Privacy module, custom filters and max limit count raised to 250k ー we have enough topics to talk about!

[Improved] Safari content blocker max rule count raised to 250k #819

Safari is notoriously known for its harsh 50k max limit for filtering rules in content blockers. This number is laughably low, and for ages we were struggling with it. Now we've implemented a workaround: split AdGuard into five content blockers. Each of them has the same 50k restriction but in total they add up to a reasonable 250k rules max. You don't have to seek weird compromises anymore and can enable all your favorite filters!

[Added] "DNS Privacy" settings section #887

This section should look familiar to seasoned AdGuard Pro users. Basically, this is where you have a chance to configure DNS settings the way you like it ー and further protect your privacy along the way. The main difference to the Pro version is that there's no blacklist or whitelist here, this was impossible under the current Apple policy. However, there is a requests log that will provide you information about everything that's going on on your device.

Its a common situation when a release is followed by a hotfix, taking care of all unnoticed bugs. The bigger the release, the more bugfixes there usually are in the hotfix. All things considered, v2.0 can be considered a success, seeing how few serious issues we had to resolve in this update.

This is one of the biggest updates in the history of AdGuard for Mac. It introduces the long-due Stealth Mode, an updated UI (including the improved Assistant), integration with CoreLibs — the new enhanced filtering engine — and much more. This is the first AdGuard for Mac that introduces CoreLibs — the new filtering engine that lies at the core of the filtering process. It is not random that we put this before such huge news as Stealth Mode or new design. The effects of this change will be both big and long lasting.

With releases like this one it's hard to build up excitement, but they are necessary. There are no major new features or radical design decisions. Instead, as you will see, there are a lot of minor UI changes to improve user experience and some fixes to known crashes. So the app should be more stable and user-friendly after this update.
