New AdGuard Browser Extension follows the trends. As if ads were not bad enough, the web today is teeming with trackers. Big companies want to know everything about you, and AdGuard is here to stop it. The new Stealth Mode is designed specifically to protect your online privacy — an entire new module dedicated just for that. But that’s even not the first thing you will notice. Of course, the new design will steal the show. Let’s have a closer look.

[Improved] Renewed design

Fresh icon and menu designs that make interface more natural and user-friendly, with a big ‘On/Off‘ switch. Brand-new ’Statistics" tab creates charts based on your blocked ads statistics, with the ability to show different types of data: total, filter-specific etc.

Also worth mentioning is the User filter. It has undergone a few changes too. The new luminous element highlighting and auto-save function, as well as a unified text field for filtering rules should make editing more convenient. The text box can also be resized to your liking.

In the anticipation of the AdGuard for Mac v2.0 big update (which is coming at the beginning of the 2019 and will have loads of new features), we really want to acquaint as many people with it as possible. And the biggest driving factor here is, of course, the ability to use the product in your native language. It was nothing but unfair that we deprived our French, Danish and Norwegian-speaking users of that opportunity. We apologize and add respective localizations to AdGuard for Mac for you to enjoy. Nobody likes to roll out a hotfix just a week after the release, but sometimes there's no other choice. We took this opportunity to not only fix the problem but also to update the CoreLibs filtering engine and make a handful of other useful changes.

[Fixed] AdGuard does not restart after auto-pause on older Android devices #2127

Turned out, on some older devices (Android 6 and older) AdGuard didn"t restart after the protection got paused automatically (say, on the network state change). This affected a large enough portion of AdGuard users to justify an immediate update.

v2.12 is filled to the brim with new features. New filtering engine takes ad blocking quality and performance to a new level, improved notification settings and automation options will make the communication with the app easier, and freshly added DNS functionality will satisfy even the most demanding of users.

Consider this version as a bridge to the big 3.0 release which surely come soon, with even more cool stuff!

We have been working hard on integration with CoreLibs for a long time, and we are extremely proud and happy to finally switch to it. The importance of it has been mentioned before multiple times, including a post in our Blog. We recommend reading it for more details, but if you only want a brief summary, here it is: CoreLibs is a cross-platform filtering engine that will substitute previously used platform-specific engines. Thanks to it, the performance rate will increase drastically (twofold for AG for Android, according to our tests!). The unified filtering engine also means shorter development cycles, we no more need to account for the nuances of this or that OS. And finally, many features that only existed for one OS can now be easilly transfered to AG products for other platforms. So expect things like Stealth Mode on Android! This update adds several minor-ish (although filter enthusiasts will argue) features to the Filtering Log and improves ad blocking quality. You'll find an array of bug fixes, as usual.

[Added] Element hiding rules highlighting #1053

Applied element hiding rules are now highlighted with yellow color in the Filtering Log. This will greatly help parse log entries. We don't need to prove it to you if you are actively using it :)

[Added] Wildcard character support in rules with domain modifier #571

Again, another treat for filtering rules creators. Previously you had to list domains old-fashioned way: example.com,example.eu etc, and now you can simply use example.* syntax.

[Improved] Scripts are injected faster #1029

To efficiently block ads on the page we need a way to reliably inject our scripts before the in-page scripts are executed. A set of measures has been taken to ensure this. While there is still no 100% guarantee, the success chance has increased considerably — along with ad blocking quality.

We really dislike releasing new versions that only contain bugfixes, but sometimes it is necessary. One of the bugs required our immediate attention, and we couldn’t wait for more features to come to release the new version.

[Fixed] Full tunnel mode misbehaviour #772

This is the main villain of the release. In full tunnel mode, some users experienced network failure after their device switched from WiFi to Mobile data. Only Flight mode on/off toggle or restarting the device helped bring the connection back to life. The bug proved to be trickier than we expected, so we added a new advanced setting to enable automatic tunnel restart after network switch.

NOTE: this setting is disabled by default. If you are one of the unlucky users, try enabling it.

This update is on a larger side, just judging by the number of entries in the changelog. Two ‘whales’ of this release are both integrations with an external app: AdGuard Assistant and web reporting tool. Assistant will help you manage filtering in apps and browsers from the notification shade, and reporting tool is what it’s called — a convenient way to report any missed ads, false positives and such.

There are now two action buttons in the AdGuard notification. One is “Pause”, which pauses the protection upon tapping (tap again on the notification to resume it), but the more interesting one is “Assistant”. When you tap it, a list of recently used apps and websites will show up. Tap on any of them for more options, like opening filtering log, denying the app network access (or whitelisting/blacklisting in case of a website), or proceeding to the app/website-specific settings screen in Apps Management.

We believe this will save you quite a bit of time, especially if you are an active user and often find yourself in a need to pause protection, whitelist a website etc. In fact, we tested it ourselves and found it extremely convenient! :)

Ho Ho Ho! Just kidding, it is not Christmas, but it might have very well been — isn’t every AdGuard Browser Extension release a special day for you? For us, it certainly is 🙂 This time we prepared a couple or two of quite important changes and improvements, to come along with a long list of more routine-ish fixes. Read on to find out the details.

[Added] Integration with the new Assistant #956

For a while now we develop AdGuard Assistant more or less independently, to later use it wherever we need — Windows and Mac apps use regular Assistant, Android and iOS apps use mobile version. Browser extension users encounter Assistant when they click "Block ads on this website" button. We will not go into the details here, those who interested can find the exhaustive changelog inside the Assistant repo.

[Improved] InsertCSS to use instead of the content scripts #847

There was a certain change in Chrome browser recently, that prompted us to respond by reconsidering the way we inject scripts and styles. The good thing is, thanks to this change we now have less bugs, more possibilities and were even able to make the extension more lightweight by reducing the amount of code.

It’s been a while since the last AdGuard for Mac release, so we owed one to our Mac users. This release is small but impactful — or at least we hope so. Some important bugfixes and key improvements have been done, all aimed at achieving better stability and filtering quality.

[Fixed] Sometimes connections can randomly slip past AdGuard #285

The title pretty much explains it. We’ve received several complaints from users about some websites not being filtered (even big ones like youtube.com). Without diving into technical details, we managed to fix it.

[Fixed] Crash in tcpClosed handler while the laptop is sleeping #295

Another bug that doesn’t really require any further explanation, but is serious enough to justify mentioning. In case you encountered this frustrating behavior — rejoice! The bug is fixed in this version.

[Improved] ExtendedCss has been updated to version 1.10 #293

This effectively means more extended cosmetic rules are supported now. Which, in its turn, ensures “cleaner” look of the post-processed pages (no ad leftovers, empty spaces etc.).

Usually we update both AdGuard and AdGuard Pro for iOS simultaneously, but not this time. Don't worry — the new version of AdGuard for iOS has arrived, and it features new design, web reporting tool integration and more.

This is undoubtedly the first thing you will notice when you run the app after the update. Light theme has been discontinued in favor of a dark one, and the overall style of the menu has changed.

[Added] Detect if Content Blocker is not enabled in Safari settings #437

Enabling AdGuard Content blocker in Safari settings is required to have filtering going on in Safari. If AdGuard is disabled, the red warning will appear at the top of the main screen to remind you to enable the Content Blocker. The video right below it shows how to do so.

[Added] Integration with the web reporting tool #533

You may have heard about the online reporting tool before, especially if you are an AdGuard for Windows or AdGuard extension user. Basically, it is a web form to report missed ads, false positives or any other issues caused by AdGuard filters. Now it is integrated with AdGuard for iOS, so whenever you report a problem, the app will automatically prefill all the required fields about its settings.
