After the recent v7.6 release a small percentage of users encountered a rather severe issue of not being able to update any filters, or even the app itself. This problem isn't very common but extremely critical to those who ran into it, so it justifies an immediate hotfix.

If you're one of the unlucky ones to have this problem, AdGuard will not update automatically for you. You need to check for updates manually or reinstall the app.

Usually, it takes us north of 2-3 beta versions to prepare the next AdGuard for Windows release. But not this time: the first (and only) beta for v7.6 carried enough impact on its own. We added custom DNS filters, DNS-over-QUIC support for AdGuard DNS, and, of course, made the app compatible with AdGuard VPN.

[Enhancement] Custom DNS subscriptions support #3641

In v7.5 we introduced DNS protection module. To refresh your memory: it offered the option to select any DNS server instead of the system default as another way to enhance your online privacy. What it didn't offer is any way to customize the DNS filtering. Once you selected the server and the preferred encryption protocol, you were set.

In this release, we give you a range of new options to shape the DNS filtering the way you want. It includes several tools, all of which can be found inside the DNS filters editor section.

custom\_dns\_support\_en

DNS user rules — the most basic way to block/allow DNS requests. Works very similarly to the regular User rules. Note that it supports DNS filtering syntax, which is much less complex than the syntax for network filtering. …

This is a rather uncharacteristic update for AdGuard for Mac. There's no real headliner, but instead a bunch of bugfixes, low-scale improvements, and localization updates. Important! Starting with this update, AdGuard will only work on macOS 10.12+. Unfortunately, the older macOS versions do not have capabilities to support the advanced techniques we use in our filtering engine.

We've just been trying to follow science and provide you with as much pleasure as possible. Finally, the intensification period ends and catharsis begins!

Another round of software release life cycle complete! This version of AdGuard for Android has made its way from an unsure of itself alpha to a confident release. We have routinely updated CoreLibs, fixed a couple of bugs and compatibility issues. This time, there are no shocking features like watching YouTube without ads but this release is no less important than the previous one. After all, we are getting better with every update!

"Permission denied" errors when checking if the machine has a static IP no longer prevent the DHCP server from starting (#2667).

The server name sent by clients of TLS APIs is not only checked when strict_sni_check is enabled (#2664).

HTTP API request body size limit for the POST /control/access/set and POST /control/filtering/set_rules HTTP APIs is increased (#2666, #2675).

We took our sweet time with this update, but you'll most certainly find it to be worth the wait. The changelog contains three absolute 💥bangers and a laundry list of lesser changes.

🕵️‍♂️ Client ID support for DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-QUIC, and DNS-over-TLS #1387

This feature would be really useful to those of you who run an encrypted DNS resolver on a public server. In short, you can now identify your devices not just by their IP address (which is, frankly, not too useful in a public server scenario 🤷‍♀️), but by using a special "Client ID".

Here's how it works:

First, you add a client and specify an arbitrary string as its "Identifier", for instance, my-iphone.

On the client device you can now configure:

DNS-over-HTTPS: https://example.org/dns-query/my-iphone

DNS-over-TLS: tls://my-iphone.example.org (requires a Wildcard certificate)

DNS-over-QUIC: quic://my-iphone.example.org (requires a Wildcard certificate)

Queries and stats are now properly attributed to your device.

We have something special for y'all today. Not just an implementation of a new feature but the first ever implementation of a new feature! 😮 This is about DNS-over-QUIC, a new DNS encryption protocol — read on to learn more.

Ah, yes, there's also a bunch of other good stuff, too: DHCP-related changes, a .mobileconfig generator for iOS and macOS, and a handful of other enhancements and bugfixes.

DNS-over-QUIC support #2049

AdGuard Home now natively supports a new DNS encryption protocol called DNS-over-QUIC. DoQ standard is currently in the draft state, and AdGuard Home (and dnsproxy) is it's first open-source implementation.🥇

So what's good about it? 🤔 Unlike DoH and DoT, it uses QUIC as a transport protocol and finally brings DNS back to its roots — working over UDP. It brings all the good things that QUIC has to offer — out-of-the-box encryption, reduced connection times, better performance when data packets are lost. Also, QUIC is supposed to be a transport-level protocol and there are no risks of metadata leaks that could happen with DoH. 🔒 …
