It's time for the long-awaited release of AdGuard Pro v4.3 for iOS. We've implemented support for AdGuard’s Safari Web Extension for iOS 15 and added Advanced protection. Never before has AdGuard Pro for iOS blocked ads so effectively!

[Enhancement] Safari Web Extension for iOS 15

The AdGuard Web Extension for Safari serves to enhance the capabilities of the AdGuard Pro for iOS app. With this extension, AdGuard can apply Advanced protection to better block ads in Safari, including YouTube ads, thanks to an improved filtering mechanism.

We’ve also performed a complete code refactoring and added an option to choose the filter update check interval in Low-level settings. And, of course, we fixed a few minor bugs in the process.

We once again reviewed GitHub repo and realized that we had been working for almost six months on version 7.7. And less than two months on version 7.8. Yes, there were fewer tasks in this version, but we did a good job on improving everything: Browsing Security, network drivers, CoreLibs and DNSLibs, other minor features, and – hopefully – your user experience.

[Enhancement] Browsing Security

Browsing Security is a module that blocks requests to malicious and phishing websites. You might have seen a nice looking banner caringly stating "AdGuard has blocked access to this page": that's what Browsing Security does. Now it's working a way better: requests for information about malicious domains are not sent to a server, but to a periodically updated database stored locally on your computer. This is faster and safer.

[Enhancement] WFP and TDI network drivers

We've also updated and enhanced our network drivers for Windows – WFP and TDI. Both have been helpful, among other things, to improve compatibility with other applications.

Other good stuff

And of course, there is no release without updating CoreLibs, our main filtering engine, and DNSLibs. Meet their new versions: more flexible, more powerful. As always: minor bugs have been fixed. As always: perfection has no limits.

Using the app has become safer, easier, and overall more pleasant. Browse the web even more securely thanks to an updated Browsing security module, activate your AdGuard account via social networks, and check for filter updates as frequently as you wish.

[Enhancement] Safebrowsing v2.0 Safebrowsing, which is responsible for blocking requests to malicious and phishing sites, has been upgraded. The new version of this module makes browsing the Internet safer than ever.

We’re back with a patch less than a week. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as the saying goes. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused to you. This patch provides a few bug fixes and improvements. Hopefully, the new version makes things better.

[Fixed] Mail.app account switched offline #965

Sometimes traffic of non-filtered protocols in filtered apps was corrupted due to a bug. That might break IMAP connections in the Apple Mail app. As a result, users of AdGuard for Mac could not access their email accounts, they showed “Offline” in the preferences. Luckily, we managed to fix this issue at the earliest possible time, so now AdGuard users shouldn’t have any trouble with receiving emails.

It took us 7 months from the previous minor release to prepare this one. Remarkably, the previous big release took place almost exactly a year ago, on October 12, 2020. That’s a substantial period of time, so we can’t help but hold our breath when we present the new version of AdGuard for Mac. It delivers such features as DNS filtering, native Apple silicon support, and Monterey support. The first two ones have been used by beta testing enthusiasts for a long time now, but today we’ve finally got to the release point, so the features will be available for all users.

We've used the same approach as in AdGuard for Windows, Android, and iOS, bringing to the app for Mac DNS servers, DNS blocklists and allowlists. One of feature requests from users was adding DNSCrypt, DoH, and DoT support. Finally, it's all there, DoT included. AdGuard DNS has become the first public DNS resolver to support the cutting-edge DNS-over-QUIC protocol. Now you needn't rely on a DNS server provided by your ISP by default, you can choose DNS servers from known DNS providers and add custom DNS servers. One beta and two RCs — and here comes AdGuard v7.7 for Windows! This time we didn't encounter significant difficulties on our way to the release stage, so the development cycle turned out to be fast. Hope you'll enjoy the way the new version of AdGuard for Windows works, meanwhile we'll keep moving to the top — v8.0.

The main focus of this release was to fix bugs and improve user experience. We performed tough tests and were unable to crash the app! But you can surely fix it, right? 🙂

For starters, we implemented low-level DNS settings, added the Finnish language and updated other translations.

There are not many significant changes in this version but we’ve put our energy into something no less important. We updated CoreLibs and DNSLibs, fixed various issues along the way, and did some magic with the filtering log to make it more user-friendly.

There is a new section named Blocking mode for DNS in low-level settings. Now you can select the response type if you've requested a DNS domain blocked by a DNS filtering rule. There are three response types to choose from.

In this version we focused on improving filtering in Safari. In parallel, we solved the problem with YouTube ads that AdGuard users had been encountering. We’ve developed two ways to block them: a shortcut, the instructions for which can be found on our blog, and a Safari extension.

The new extension is designed specifically to block ads on YouTube in Safari and runs only there. Unlike the shortcut, the extension is built into the app, so you don’t need to install it manually. To block ads on YouTube, tap the “Share” button and select “Block ads on YouTube (by AdGuard).” After that, the “with AdGuard” caption will appear next to the YouTube logo. If it’s not there, you’ve probably reloaded the page and need to activate the extension again.
